Action filmmaking was plagued by clichés that seemed designed to ape “whatever kids are into these days” like Nu Metal soundtracks that would age like milk under the sun, badly used bullet time, or overblown set pieces based on extreme sports. James Bond was surfing on a CGI tsunami, and xXx promised the world that it was the next big franchise.
